Overthrow Martha

Hello there blog world.  It feels so good to be back.  I can't believe I haven't blogged for almost two weeks! Last week I was on vacation, and this week I just haven't quite gotten around to blogging.

But today, here I am. Back in action.

Ok so I wanted to dedicate this post to one of my favorite blogs that I follow religiously: Overthrow Martha

I came across her blog while searching for more tips and advice on switching to a natural skincare routine.  Her blog became my skin's savior.

All throughout my life I've had virtually flawless skin.  Ok so I had some little bumps on my forehead, but those were easily manageable.  My senior year of high school decided to change all that.  After a trip to the dermatologist and one nasty skin cream later, my face became way worse than it was before.  The bumps on my forehead moved to my cheeks, chin, and wherever they found room to sprout.  I'll admit it, the bumps weren't THAT bad, and I still have some bumps today, but they were frustrating and made my skin look very rough.

My freshman year of college, while living on the opposite side of the country, with a new environment, new weather, and new stresses, my skin decided it was time to break out even more.
I continued to wash my face with Cetaphil and then slather a weird, drying cream on my face.  The fall brought water polo, which meant I was always in a heavily chlorinated pool.  Although I stopped using the cream from the dermatologist, my skin still lacked moisture.  The result: severely dry and irritated skin.  Remember that irritation = acne.  I haven't forgotten that magic little formula.   I then received tons of lovely whiteheads, bumps, and red inflammatory marks after the whiteheads went away.  I had never felt worse about myself.  This was college and I was supposed to be looking and feeling great! Going out, meeting guys, doing the things that college girls normally want to do.
I didn't want to do anything.  I was so terrified of talking to people because I felt that they were just staring at these spots on my skin.  It's so frustrating because it seemed like the acne was covering up who I really was as a person.  Trying to make new friends was hard, but talking to people of the opposite sex was impossible.

After school ended, I returned to my familiar west coast home for the sumer.  I decided that it was time to fix my skin and regain my life.  I threw away all of my old chemical skincare creams and washes.  I invested in aloe juice, sweet almond oil, and alcohol free witch hazel.  I still use a regular moisturizer/sunscreen when I feel my skin needs an extra boost of moisture, but the result from the three products I just listed is astounding.
My red marks from the whiteheads are almost totally gone.
My flaky, irritated skin feels soft for the first time in a year, and now I rarely have a breakout.
I may have the occasional, tiny zit every two weeks, but it's generally almost gone before I even notice it.
Sweet almond oil has made the most profound difference.  For skin that had no ounce of moisture in it before, this magical substance is so nourishing and feels so wonderful.  I just apply it at night, and wake up with healthier, softer skin in the morning.  Aloe has been no slouch either, and has been VERY helpful in getting rid of those red marks.  I have only recently started using alcohol free witch hazel, but I am loving it! I used to have very red cheeks, but the witch hazel calms them down and moisturizes at the same time.
I also do a honey mask every night.  It is very soothing and antibacterial to keep those zits away.
The results from switching to natural products: smooth, healthy, almost perfect skin.
I have never been happier.

This would not have been possible without Overthrow Martha.  Her advice and reviews on DIY skincare products are amazing.  Her story is inspiring, and her blog is always a blast to read.  If you struggle with skin issues, please check her out.   I would have never thought to buy sweet almond oil as a moisturizer, or add in aloe juice or witch hazel as part of my skincare routine.
Don't believe the fad that you need to scrub your face off with an insanely expensive face wash, apply toner, apply moisturizer, and then apply benzoyl peroxide or some other disgusting cream.  Let go of those chemicals- your skin will thank you for it.

But before you do anything else, check out www.overthrowmartha.com

Prepare to be amazed!

Have a wonderful, relaxing Sunday.

Sincerely,
Anne Elliot

The Paleo Diet and Cauliflower Popcorn

Happy Saturday, everyone.

Today I sit down to write about my attempt at making a healthy Paleo and also "delicious" snack that I found off the internet.  I'm sure you readers have heard of Paleo, read about it, or at least heard someone brag about how they are on the Paleo Diet.

For those of you that don't know about Paleo, let me break down the basics for you.
This caveman "diet," or "lifestyle" as hardcore Paleoers prefer to call it, is based on the idea that we should only be eating what the caveman ate about 2.5 million years ago.  At this time, these Paleolithic men and women were only eating meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.  Thanks to solid nutrition, our intelligence, strength, and fitness skyrocketed.  Human beings flourished, and we made incredible gains in our species.
However, the cultivation of grains and legumes screwed up this process of growth about 10,000 years ago.  The cavemen diet believes that our bodies have not been fully adapted to take in these massive amounts of grains and carbohydrate intake that our modern food pyramid loves to advertise.  The widespread low fat, high carbohydrate diet has swept our world, making us fat and sick.  We have more diabetes, more cancer, and more obesity.  Thankfully this "fat is evil' campaign has slowly begun to die down.  People are realizing that these toxic foods, once considered good for you, (margarine, cereal), are actually making us sick.  The foods that were once considered bad for you (butter, meat), are actually good for you.

Although I'm definitely not 100% Paleo, and will never be 100% Paleo, I try to go about it the best I can.  I'm thankful that I learned this information now, instead of 50 years from now when it's harder to turn back the clock of awful nutrition.  I'm also still not saying that this diet works for everyone.  Indeed, some people may feel perfectly well and healthy with some bread or pasta in their diet.

However, if you do feel sluggish and terrible during the day, even though you think you are eating "healthy," I suggest you examine this Paleo Diet.  Many people consider it just a fad, but I certainly think it makes a lot of sense.  I, myself, try to live a life of 80/20.  I focus on putting good fats and lots of veggies into my body 80% of the time, while there are occasional meals (20% of the time) when I eat popcorn, a cheeseburger, candy, or a big bowl of ice cream.  You gotta live a little.  Plus, the more you work on having that healthy base, there's no reason to feel guilty about treating yourself!  Exercise, eat well when you can, but don't freak out if you have some pizza or something.  Life is a balance.  It's not all or nothing.  Especially for us females, there's something about being on your period that makes me throw logic and healthy eating out the window.  I have definitely had period days where I sit on the couch and eat ice cream out of the tub.  Don't sweat it- sometimes you need that.  Like I said previously, there's nothing wrong with you and a marriage of junk food and your favorite TV show.   When you have such a hectic life, it's good to do what makes you happy every once in awhile.

Alright, now that I have wasted this entire blog post talking about Paleo, I might as well just add in a bit about my adventure into cauliflower popcorn.

I was trying to come up with a healthy snack, so I read all these reviews about how this stuff  is "So great! Tastes just like popcorn!"and "Perfectly delicious Paleo snack" and "My toddler thinks this really is popcorn!"
First of all, I must point out that popcorn is 100% my favorite food.  I like ice cream, but there's something about hot buttered popcorn that just makes my mouth water at any moment.

Anyway, I decided I would try this cauliflower popcorn, thinking it might be a good substitute for my popcorn cravings.  So, I went to the store and bought two huge things of cauliflower.  Turns out I only needed one.  I butchered one of them on my counter (there was cauliflower EVERYWHERE), rubbed it in coconut oil, threw on some cayenne pepper and paprika like a chef pro, and popped those suckers into the oven at 425 degrees.  I was confused as to if I should roast them or bake them: some sites said bake, others said roast.
So I baked them.
After 20 minutes I took them out, put a little more spices on them, and voila.  It was absolutely awful.  I don't know if I just didn't leave them in long enough or what, but they just kind of tasted like shoes with a bit of paprika.  Those reviewers were liars, and if my toddler had tried that and accepted it as a popcorn, I would have been so ashamed.  As a result, I don't think I'll be trying that recipe again.  I have made kale chips before, and those actually came out quite delicious.  But for anyone out there who thought about making these, think again, or do the complete opposite of what I did.  Roast them and don't put any spices on them. Whatever, just BE CAREFUL.   After I made this awful batch of baked shoes, I just made a bowl of real popcorn over the stove. And I ate it.  And ya know what?  It was fantastic.  I didn't feel bad about it at all.

Sorry about the long post.  I got a bit carried away today, as I only planned to talk about Paleo very briefly. One last thing, here's a picture of how my cauliflower should have looked.  I wouldn't dare post a picture of mine.

This looks slightly appetizing, but seriously, if you are in the mood for popcorn, just make popcorn. Don't ruin your taste buds or your kitchen like I did.

Talk to ya guys later!

Sincerely,
Anne Elliot

The Title of My Blog

I'm sure anyone who comes across this blog is wondering what Uppercross Cottage is.
What is it and why did you name your blog that.

1) Uppercross Cottage is where Anne Elliot stays in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion.

2) I named my blog Uppercross Cottage because I wanted to name my blog Uppercross Cottage. Honestly I just thought it sounded zippy and different.  I wanted a unique name, one that would catch the eye.  Plus, for all you Jane Austen fans out there, I knew you would appreciate it.  Isn't it neat to imagine you are staying in a little English countryside cottage while you read this blog?  For those that don't know (which you really should), Uppercross Cottage is located in Bath in the book, so why don't you just pull up a picture of Bath on google right now and pretend you are living there.  You're welcome.

I wanted to take some time in this post to talk about Jane Austen and her heart wrenching stories.  I'm curious as to what some of you readers think of her books.  My favorite is without a doubt Persuasion, but I also hold Emma and Pride and Prejudice very dear to my heart.

I do have issues with some people (not all) who say they LOVE Jane Austen.  I always ask them what their favorite book is and their response is consistently Pride and Prejudice.  If someone says they love Jane Austen and their favorite book is Pride and Prejudice, you know they're lying.  Most of the time that just means they have only watched the P&P movie with Keira Knightley.  That's fine and all, but if you're only going to watch the movie, at least make sure you watch the BBC version of P&P if you plan to call yourself a fan of hers.

Also, do me a favor and branch out from the world of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett, as hard as that may be.  Those two make for quite a delightful read, but so do the characters of Emma Woodhouse and Anne Elliot.  Check them out.   The love story in Persuasion is absolutely awesome- you will not be disappointed in the slightest.  I think it's so much more romantic than that of P&P, and as much as I want to gush over the details in the story, I'll refrain in the hopes that those of you who haven't read it will give it a shot.
Emma is also wonderful, but I'm not gonna lie, it's kind of weird that she ends marrying a guy who was sort of a brother figure to her.  Sorry, spoiler alert.  The whole point of the story is that he is IN NO WAY her brother by blood, but the fact that she thought of him as a brother and then realized that she actually was in love with him is a bit weird sometimes.  Whatever.  Still a great read.  Make sure you watch Clueless after you read this one.  I know I mentioned Clueless in the last post- I guess it's been on my mind a lot.  If you have some time, go watch it on Netflix!  It's absolutely hilarious, and 100% certain to make you laugh, or at least put a smile on your face.

Here's a quick view of Bath if you didn't have the energy to type it into Google. Isn't it just lovely?

That's all for now.

Happy Wednesday! May your day be filled with tea and lots of laughter.

My Pinterest Addiction

Happy Tuesday ya'll.

I sit here writing this blog post on crappy Starbucks wifi because I'm way too cool to write this post at my house.   I must admit that Starbucks is one of my great loves.  Not really so much for the drinks though.  I don't have a favorite, mainly just drinking coffee or black tea, but I truly enjoy the atmosphere.  I feel so hip when I walk in there. The soothing music and the chill posters of coffee on the wall make for a relaxing break in a hectic day.

Anyway, I didn't write this blog post to talk about Starbucks, although that sounds like a wonderful topic for another time.  I am writing this blog post to discuss Pinterest.  You know, that site that is like a virtual craft board? How do you women feel about it?  For me it's a definite love/hate relationship.
I'm a sucker for the fashion-my favorite category on the site.  I take copious notes from the beautiful outfits and hairstyles they have on there.
I'm a sucker for the humorous memes.  Sometimes they are pretty funny and manage to put a smile on my face.  Whatever works.

Alright but I also have a definite hate relationship with it. More hate than love, I have recently discovered.
Most of the time the quotes just stress me out.  Just today I was browsing through the plentiful quote section and came across this quote for the 500th time: "What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it."  That is just one example.  Here's some others that irritate me:
"Don't count the days, make the days count."
"In the end we only regret the chances we didn't take."
I know what you're all thinking.  These quotes are amazing! And totally true.
Yes I absolutely agree, but for some reason they still freak me out.  I know they're supposed to calm me down, but most of the time they just give me a panic attack.  I'm always sitting on my bed, being lazy and reading quotes like "Your life may end tomorrow. Make it count." And then I just think holy crap I just wasted a day being lazy... does that make me a bad person?
Ok I would also like to address those pictures of those girls with perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect makeup, and a perfect background behind them- you know what I'm talking about.  I realized that those pictures were becoming kind of toxic for my own well being.  My life will never look like that, and I will never look like that. I might do that hairstyle or wear that shirt but I'm never gonna look just like her.  I will never have that type of body, but that's perfectly ok.  I can also guarantee that the boy I will be kissing will NOT happen under a sunset, on the beach, at the moment right before the sun fully sets like Mr. and Mrs. Darcy's kiss in Pride and Prejudice (actually I think that was the sunrise but you get the point if you've seen the movie).

I'm considering deleting my Pinterest, or only going on there to look at fashion inspiration (hey they've got good stuff what can I say).  Or rather, maybe I just need to take a step back and embrace the imperfections in my life.  No, I don't have perfect skin.  I don't have a boyfriend who I can kiss on the beach during the sunset.  I don't have perfectly long beach hair.  I am not a surfer, as much as I have dreamed of being one.

No indeed. Instead, I am a short girl with medium length blonde hair.  I grew up a swimmer in a small mountain town.  I have far from perfect skin.  I have things I don't like about my body.  I am self-conscious about my smile, and I don't have that sweet six pack the girls on Pinterest do.
But that's absolutely fine.  I know I'm sounding like an insane feminist on this post, and believe me I'm generally the farthest from it, but I am really trying to learn how to love myself.  Finally I am somewhat liking what I see in the mirror, and realizing that my life doesn't need perfect skin, perfect outfits, and a perfect body to be fabulous.  As of now, I'm just trying to focus on creating an almost perfect "inside" of myself.  What's that Clueless quote?  She says she will "makeover her soul." I've always loved that.   I may love beautiful clothes and makeup just as much as the next girl, but I think it truly is what kind of attitude and "vibe" you convey to others that make your life worthwhile.

Also, if you take some days to just sit around, do nothing, watch Netflix and eat junk food- don't worry about it.   I think a few lazy days are just as good for the soul as a day full of productive, soul enriching experiences.  Your body needs both.

What do you think of Pinterest?

Sincerely,
Anne Elliot

A Little About Me

Hello there fellow females.  I thought I'd start out this blog with just a smidgen of information as to who I am.  I won't reveal much.
I am not yet 20 years old.
I love to swim.
I hate to run.
I grew up on the west coast and am now going to school on the east coast.
I am obsessed with all things skincare.
I like pretty hairstyles and pretty nails but I suck at both so I remain with simple hair and simple nails.
I like the San Francisco Giants. Buster Posey is quite a hunk.
I hope to make people laugh.
I love Jane Austen.  My favorite book of hers is Persuasion.

That's all I really feel like saying today. Since this blog is as new as can be, there's not much to see here.
Please don't go away though, there will be more goodies to come.

If someone does at all read this, send me an email and let me know what type of articles you want to hear. What you want to read about, what to bitch about, what to learn about…. I'm open to any and all ideas.
I plan to make weekly posts about the struggles of being a girl, my sometimes not quite boring life, boys, skincare, haircare, pets, and anything in between.  I want other women to read these posts and smile or laugh. Let me know what you like! Do not give up on me, and please shoot me an email.  I could use a little help right now.

Before I go, I want to promote my favorite blog: the Love Vitamin. If you don't already follow it, please go take in some delicious skincare wisdom.  I struggle with skin issues, and her blog has really helped me move forward and feel good about myself again.  Check it out:

I hope your day is going as fantastic as mine is.  For once, the hot sun has decided to take a breather today, and the overcast weather is just delightful.  Have a wonderful Monday, and remember your awesomeness.
